Hed been working abroad for several years and, for the most part, had made peace with local replacements for his daily staples. But the one thing that he truly yearned for was meetha pan “ no other delicacy could ever match up to the inimitable combination of betel leaves, gulkand and fennel seeds that concluded festive meals. One Diwali, he was especially homesick. He missed his family, the chatter surrounding the festivities, the traditional eats, the music and the merrymaking. Suddenly, home seemed like a long way away. His gaze drifted to the box of pan truffles that his colleague had gifted in. He popped the box open and tentatively nibbled on one. The unmistakable taste of pan flooded his taste buds, further enhanced by the coarse texture of the sweetened shredded coconut, the hint of cardamom and the signature goodness of gulkand or rose jam. He realised then that home wasnt a physical place but a memory that he could revisit anytime he wanted.
